Babble Books Volume I - What Can Poppy Hear?

Supercharge your child’s speech development journey with this fun, digital picture book designed to support the early stages in the development of new sounds and speech production.

'What Can Poppy Hear?' is the first volume in a series of kids' books developed and written by a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to support the development of speech sounds and babble in young children.

What's the story?

You and your child will join Poppy (the Lhasa Apso puppy) for a fun adventure exploring her new house, discovering new sounds she hears along the way.

Poppy will help parents, teachers and Speech Therapists to engage and entertain young children with a story that is made up of a careful selection of sounds to support them with learning how to use different parts of their mouth, tongue and lips when talking.

The sounds are presented in a repetitive fashion to create opportunities for little ones to try new sounds over and over again. This has been proven to be the most effective way to master new sounds.

The Importance of Babble

Learning to use sounds and combine these sounds in sequences is an important first step to producing first words.

When babies babble, they are practicing the sounds they hear adults using around them, and experimenting with how they can use those sounds to create speech patterns which later become word approximations.

Babble Books have been designed specifically to support each stage in the development of new sounds and speech production, across three volumes:

  • Volume I - What Can Poppy Hear - single sounds (e.g. ‘m,’ ‘p,’ ‘sh’)
  • Volume II - What Did Poppy Do? - moving onto simple words joining vowels and consonants together e.g. ‘up,’ ‘me,’ eat’
  • Volume III - What Can Poppy See? - using ounds in more complex CVCV words e.g. ‘mummy,’ baby,’ ‘nosy’

Each book includes tips and ideas of how you can use the stories to help to develop your child’s speech and vocabulary.

Technical Stuff for Speech Therapists

'What Can Poppy Hear?' covers a range of voiced and voiceless sounds, including plosives, nasals, fricatives and affricates. Places of articulation include bilabials, labiodental, alveolar, postalveolar and velar sounds.
